Moving to Japan
Happy New Year, everyone. As I get ready to discharge from the military, I have started to realize that finally moving to Japan after so many years of dreaming is actually pretty nerve-racking. I thought I was completely prepared for the move. I have done the research over the years, talked with people who have made the move themselves, and tried to get ahead of any possible difficulties. However, one thing remains true. Everyone’s experience moving abroad is unique. There will always be challenges and circumstances that are specific to you as an individual, things that others never had to deal with.

I am glad I had the opportunity to travel to Japan in the past. The first time I visited, in 2016, was only for a week as part of a sister city program. Even so, that single week completely hooked me. I already knew I loved Japanese culture and the language, but experiencing it in person for the first time was something entirely different. I knew I needed to go back.
I’ve been living in Omaha for almost two years now, and it will be amazing to finally leave. This place just is not for me. Honestly, the drivers here are the worst. I do not think I have seen a single vehicle without some kind of damage. And do not even get me started on winter driving haha.
Now that I have my plan, my job, and a clear path to Japan, I am more excited than ever. I will continue planning and doing what I can to make the move as smooth as possible, but I am also staying flexible and ready for whatever happens.
Here’s to an amazing 2026!
